How to Choose the Most Energy Efficient Appliance with Hotpoint and Youreko

Choose the most energy efficient appliance with Hotpoint

When you’re looking to purchase a new appliance, choosing one with a high efficiency rating will benefit you in the long run, as it’ll save on your household energy consumption, meaning you’ll save money. You may have to pay a little more upfront for a more energy efficient model, but you’ll know you’re making a thoughtful purchase for both your home and for the environment.

How Youreko can help save energy

When comparing appliances, you can look at the energy label to understand how much energy the model will use in an average year, and over its lifetime. However, we know energy labels can be quite confusing, so in 2018, we partnered with Youreko to help easily demonstrate the financial benefits that choosing an energy efficient appliance can bring.

How does it work?

Youreko loads all home appliances in the UK from appliance manufacturers and major retail websites, then uses the energy labels to calculate the lifetime energy cost for every product in the market. The Youreko tool breaks this information down into easy to understand running costs and lifetime energy savings, compared to like-for-like products.

Your results can be customised based on your average usage, energy tariff, and appliance age. Look for the Youreko calculator on our laundry, refrigeration, and dishwashing ranges and learn about how much you can save.

Medal ratings

On our website, you’ll also see that our appliances have been given a Youreko Best of the Best, Gold, Silver or Bronze medal rating, which is based on their overall energy savings. These medals don't just compare Hotpoint with other Hotpoint products, it is also comparing other manufacturers too. So if you’re looking to buy a new 8kg tumble dryer, and you see one listed as ‘Gold for energy savings’, you can be sure it is one of the most energy efficient 8kg tumble dryers on the market.

Compare appliances at a glance

The Youeko tool will automatically recommend an alternative appliance if the energy saving outweighs the up-front cost

Compare appliances energy efficiency

For example, if you’re viewing a 9kg condenser tumble dryer, the tool may suggest an alternative heat pump 9kg tumble dryer that costs an extra £41 upfront to buy, but costs £1,437 less in running costs, giving you an overall saving of £1,396 over the lifetime of owning the appliance.

Customise the tool to your household

The Youreko tool will calculate savings based on the average number of cycles a typical household would run each week across the average lifetime of the appliance as a default, and use the current average energy cost per kWh as set out by the Energy Saving Trust. If you use your appliance more or less than the average, or have a higher or lower energy cost per kWh, you can customise the tool, so you’ll see a more accurate saving according to your household.

A savings calculation example

Here is an example calculation of the operating cost of a washing machine over one year, and over the lifetime of the appliance, when used by an average family:

A: Power consumption: 0.627 kWh per cycle
B: Appliance usage: 284 cycles per year
C. Energy tariff: 34p per kWh

Electricity cost calculation (A * B * C) / 100 = £60.54

The annual increase in electricity costs over 11 years is then applied, which results in a lifetime energy cost of £954.

*Saving calculated by Youreko and are based on the energy usage of models H1 D80W UK, H3 D81WB UK, and NT M11 8X3XB UK compared to the least efficient 8kg model in the market, operating on the standard cotton cupboard dry programme as published on product fiche or energy label, completing 254 cycles per year (5 per week) over 13 years, with an average current energy cost of 34p per kWh and an average annual increase in electricity costs of 4.92% per year. Further details on calculations can be found at Hotpoint.co.uk. Savings calculated 25/11/2022 and may vary depending on other factors such as usage, energy cost fluctuations, cycle type etc.
