Roast Beef With Caramelised Onion Gravy Recipe

Looking for a delicious and simple roast beef with caramelised onion gravy recipe? Look no further, this easy to make roast beef recipe will make everyone want more. Best of all, it takes only 30 minutes to prepare, and it cooks in just 1hr and 30 mins.

Here is the list of ingredients you will need

  • 1 tbsp black peppercorn
  • 1 tbsp English mustard powder
  • 1 tbsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp celery seeds
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

about 2kg/4lb 8oz topside joint of beef

  • And for the gravy
  • 4 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 beef stock cubes
  • 3 tbsp caramelised onion chutney or marmalade
  • 2-3 tsp yeast extract

Let’s get cooking

Step 1
Combine the peppercorns, mustard powder, thyme and celery seeds together with a pinch of salt, and crush them well. Add the oil and mix, then rub it all over the meat. To ensure the beef gets the seasoning, marinate overnight.

Step 2
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas, and add your roast in once the oven reaches its temperature. Be sure to follow the roast cooking directions, ideally 12 mins per 450g/1lb for medium-rare, or 15 mins per 450g/1lb for medium-well. Once ready, remove from the oven, place the beef into a clean dish, cover it with foil, and let it rest for 30 mins.

Step 3
In the meantime you can get the gravy ready. From the roast pan, save any leftover juices and let them separate. If no fat is left, add 2 tbsp of olive oil or butter into the pan. If you have more than that left, be sure to remove the excess before proceeding. Take the sauce pan to a low/mid cooker or hob temperature and combine the other ingredients flour, stock cubes, onion chutney or marmalade and yeast extract. Cook for 1 min, stirring well to scrape up any beefy bits stuck to the pan, then gradually stir in 750ml hot water. Continue to mix until the sauce thickens.

That’s it! The roast is ready to be sliced and served with this delicious caramelised onion gravy sauce. Enjoy.
